Pine Mountain Cloverdale Peak Wineries

Ranging in altitude between 1600 and 2600 feet, the Pine Mountain Cloverdale Peak wine-growing area features unique environmental conditions that result in longer growing cycles, later ripening, and harvesting that occurs up to three weeks later than other regions. This results in perfect growing conditions for mostly red varietals, especially Cabernet Sauvignon grapes.

The Pine Mountain Cloverdale Peak AVA covers the very northeast corner of Sonoma County and the very southwest corner of Mendocino County, just northeast of Cloverdale and Preston. While the entire region covers almost 4600 acres, less than 350 of those are planted, with most vineyards found at elevations of 1800 feet and above.

Due to the high growing elevations, much of the volcanic soil found on Pine Mountain and Cloverdale Peak is thin, ranging to three feet to several inches. These rugged conditions, matched with the high winds and rainfall of the mountains, create more stress on the vines and result in intensely flavored fruit. The good news is that the growing areas face south, all but assuring enough warmth and light for the fruit to flourish.

While the region grows more than a dozen wine varietals including Chardonnay, Malbec, and Merlot, the region is ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, which account for almost 80% of the area’s total varietal mix.

As a result of a chance crossing between Cabernet franc and Sauvignon blanc in the 17th century, Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are a relative newcomer to wine-making. These thick-skinned fruits produce high-tannin wines with full body and high acidity. The cooler climate found in the Pine Mountain and Cloverdale Peak region produces undertones of black currant, mint, cedar, and even a touch of green bell pepper flavor.

A total of 15 winegrowers and wineries have selected the Pine Mountain and Cloverdale Peak region to grow some or all of their varietals here, producing some of the most delicious vintages in the state.
